FOR PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCING DISADVANTAGE

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

The Cairns Community Legal Centre Inc (the Centre) is a non-profit government funded community organisation that provides accessible legal services for members of the community experiencing disadvantage. The Centre provides community education for a large range of groups, which may be delivered through seminars, talks, stalls, articles and/or workshops.

Why have community education?

Community education can serve a number of purposes. It can be an avenue:

  • for people to find out what their legal rights and responsibilities are
  • to tell people what they can do to enforce their rights and carry out their responsibilities
  • to tell people about new laws that come out and how those new laws might affect them
  • to tell people what they might do in certain circumstances eg: if they get arrested; if they have a car accident
  • to tell people about the Centre and what it does

Who does the Centre provide community education for?

Some examples are listed below. Just because you may not be on the list, it doesn’t mean the Centre won’t provide your group with community education. For more information, please contact us today.

  • not for profit community organisations who assist disadvantaged people
  • people with disabilities
  • seniors and seniors groups
  • Indigenous People
  • young people

What topics can the Centre give community education about?

The Centre may provide community education on topics such as:

  • family law eg: children’s matters; property matters
  • consumer law eg: buying a car; refunds
  • employment law
  • discrimination
  • elder abuse and exploitation

The topics listed are just some examples. If you are interested in a topic and it isn’t on the list above, just ask the Centre about what topic you might like the Centre to do a talk about. If the Centre doesn’t have the expertise to provide a talk in the area you’re wanting, we will try and refer you to another organisation who might be able to assist.

How can community education be provided?

Usually community education is provided face to face in groups. The Centre aims to make its community education as accessible, practical and easy to understand as possible. Appropriate arrangements will be discussed with you. Community education can also take other forms as well such as information stalls at community events or workshops. Anyone wishing the Centre to provide material for such an event should contact the Centre.

What does community education cost?

Community education programs are free. However, donations are always greatly appreciated.
