Volunteering

Who can do Volunteer Work Experience?

The Cairns Community Legal Centre Inc (the Centre) offers volunteer work experience for:

  • Solicitors
  • University students (whether law students or otherwise)

What the Centre offers Volunteers

The Centre does its best to provide its volunteers with meaningful work in an area which the volunteer is interested in.

What do Volunteers do at the Centre?

Solicitors may be engaged on a roster basis to provide legal advice in the areas of family, civil or crime.  Solicitors are usually rostered on once every 3-4 weeks to provide advice in relation to an area of law (family, civil or crime) that they are family with.

Volunteer law and other students may:

  • Sit in on legal advice sessions (with the consent of the client)
  • Assist with casework, community education programs and law reform campaigns
  • Assist with legal research
  • Establish contacts and network
  • Find out what it’s like being a lawyer in a community organisation
  • Acquire skills in general office procedure and protocol

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers often find that it is rewarding to assist people in need.  Making a contribution to the community is often a valuable experience.  It’s also an opportunity to network, learn new skills, and be exposed to a unique aspect of legal practice.
