Community Education

What is Community Education?

Community Education is seminars, talks and workshops to educate the community, about legal and other related matters.

Why have Community Education?

Community Education can serve a number of purposes. It can be an avenue:

  • for people to find out what their legal rights and responsibilities are in relation to a variety of issues
  • to tell people what they can do to enforce their rights and carry out their responsibilities
  • to tell people how to make a claim or complaint
  • to tell people about new laws that come out and how those new laws might affect them
  • to tell people what they should or shouldn’t do in certain circumstances eg: if they get arrested; if they have a car accident
  • to tell people about the Centre and what it does.

Who does the Centre provide Community Education for?

The Centre provides Community Education for groups of people. Some of these are:

  • management and staff of not for profit community organisations
  • students
  • young people
  • aboriginal people
  • people with disabilities
  • seniors and seniors groups

These are just some examples. Just because you may not be on the list it doesn’t mean the Centre won’t provide your group with Community Education.

What topics can the Centre give Community Education about?

The Centre may provide Community Education on topics that are within its area of competency. The areas that this includes are:

  • Family Law eg: Children’s matters; Property matters
  • Consumer Rights Law eg: Buying a Car; Refunds
  • Employment Law
  • Disability Discrimination eg: What is Disability Discrimination and what to do if you think you have been discriminated against
  • Elder Abuse and exploitation eg what is elder abuse, financial exploitation and what to do if you think you or someone you know may be effected by it.

The topics listed are just some examples. If you are interested in a topic and it isn’t on the list above, just ask the Centre about what topic you might like the Centre to do a talk about.

How can Community Education be provided?

Usually Community Education is provided face to face in groups at an appropriate venue. The Centre aims to make its Community Education as accessible, practical and easy to understand as possible. Appropriate arrangements will be discussed with you.

Community Education can also take other forms as well such as:

  • Information stalls at community events. Anyone wishing the Centre to provide material for such an event should contact the Centre.
  • Radio segments. Again if you wish us to do a radio segment you should contact the Centre about this.
  • The Centre’s regular newsletter called "Newsletter of the Law". Anyone wanting to receive a copy of the "Newsletter of the Law" should contact the Centre to get on our mailing list. We will then post the newsletter out to you.

What does Community Education cost?

Community Education programs are free. However, donations are always greatly appreciated.
